Movement Inhibition Therapy

Description

This course consists primarily of application of muscle inhibition to assist patients with movement. Movement Inhibition Therapy is a non-traditional treatment used over years of practice with patients that have unwanted movements that limit functional capabilities. It provides a sense of awareness and brain transformation with movements by improving efficiency and safety with general mobility. Movement Inhibition Therapy also helps to minimize risk of unexpected contractures and deformity, hip subluxation, and scoliosis with progression toward developmental milestones. A portion of the course will also be dedicated to splint fabrication and use to provide the appropriate treatment for the best outcome.
There are many children with a brain insult affecting the central nervous system that are not able to achieve a certain level of independence. Maria Teresa has been applying Movement Inhibition Therapy with her patients and has achieved great success decreasing the need for extensive surgical procedures. It is a non-invasive treatment used to assist children in gaining more independence by transforming the brain to reduce unwanted movements.
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
*Describe normal child development
*Recognize appropriate reflex responses and age of integration.
*Determine type of patients and conditions that could benefit from MIT treatment.
*Identify the primary and secondary impairments that contribute to limitations in functional abilities
*Describe consequences of unwanted movements and how to prevent secondary complications
*Demonstrate the correct sequence of inhibitory movements to increase postural control
*Describe the appropriate ROM to determine the necessity of immobilization.
*Construct and use appropriate immobilization devices to increase quality of movement.
