Understanding Behavioral Communication and Using Visual Supports Effectively to Improve Communication

Description

This all- day workshop will focus on changing problem behaviors based on providing a variety of strategies that address communication for those who are nonverbal, minimally verbal, or limited spontaneous communicators. Participants will learn how to incorporate visual supports throughout the day and how to shape behaviors using these supports. People on the autism spectrum and other disorders, often have difficulty processing auditory information and communicating verbally; however, this does not mean they are unable to communicate. For many, inappropriate behavior is a primary way to communicate their emotions, desires, and needs. This workshop will examine the various means of behavioral communication as well as how to shape these behaviors into more effective communication. We will explore many ways in which visuals can both improve understanding of expectations and help individuals to communicate.
