The Many Faces of Autism

Description

Despite the many strides made in the autism community, there is still stigma and stereotyping that often accompanies a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. This two hour workshop is designed to help Service Coordinators understand that young children with ASD can present with as wide a variety of skills, strengths, and areas of concern as any other child in early intervention. Through family stories, videos of children and review of actual cases, we will highlight the fact that some of the more common challenges such as eye contact, social interaction and repetitive, restrictive behavior can be mild or even situational for some children who don’t always “look autistic”. We will review the most recent diagnostic criteria in the DSMV and compare and contrast to previous information and consider how this impacts our work on teams in the Illinois Early Intervention System.
