Reflective Practice in EI: How Our Own Experience Informs Beliefs and Expectations

Description

This workshop will be reflective in nature as we discuss concepts related to how our own experiences influence our beliefs and expectations about parenting. As a basis for reflection, we will consider the seminal work of Selma Fraiberg, Edna Adelson and Vivian Shapiro's "Ghosts in the Nursery."
While all mother child interactions may not be as dramatically influenced as portrayed in this 1974 work, we can use this framework to reflect and consider how early experiences may or may not impact our own beliefs and expectations around child rearing.
It is important to note that participants will be given time to process and reflect on their own family history, and how it may or may not "be present" in their work with families. Active discussion will be invited, but completely voluntary.
The workshop will end with open discussion related to how to utilize increased awareness to appropriately support families.
