DSM5: Elimination of the Multi-Axial Diagnostic system

Description

The DSM-5® represents a fundamental shift in how disorders are conceptualized and diagnosed. The workshop provides an overview of the manual’s new organization, other innovations such as spectrum disorders and the relationship between DSM-5® and the ICD. Participants learn the nuts and bolts of using the manual and coding a DSM-5® diagnosis. The program reviews major classes of psychiatric disorders with particular attention paid to significant changes in the diagnostic criteria. Throughout the workshop participants are given opportunities to practice making a diagnosis using the new system.

This workshop will review all the major changes associated with the transition from the DSM-IV® to the DSM-5®. Special emphasis will be placed on changes to the overall diagnostic system including the implications of the elimination of the 5-Axis diagnostic system and an increased emphasis on assessment, development and cultural dimensions. Changes across each DSM chapter will be highlighted. There will be time devoted to practicing writing out diagnoses using the new system. Information about an implementation timeline will also be discussed.
