Parent Coaching: Incorporating Parent Participation for Effective Interventions

Description

This workshop will discuss how non-mental health professionals can incorporate true parent participation into their treatment of young children for the benefit of both the parent and the child through parent coaching. Current research supporting the importance of fostering parent child interaction will be reviewed. Drawing on the DIR model and concepts in infant mental health, the impact of the child’s individual differences on the parent child interaction will be discussed. The developmental benefits of parent participation in therapeutic intervention will be presented as well as potential problems associated with parent coaching including recognizing and working with issues surrounding therapeutic boundaries, transference, and counter transference issues that may arise and recognizing mental health concerns that require referral to a mental health. Parent coaching techniques applicable across disciplines will be discussed using case based material, video examples, and in class participation.
