Traumatic Loss and Violence: Impact on Family Functioning

Description

This workshop is will be presented from the perspectives of a community social worker and juvenile police detective working with at risk youth and families. It is designed for practicing community social workers in the school, mental health, community agency, hospital, or child welfare settings. Children and families experience many types of trauma – community and school violence, early childhood trauma, traumatic grief, child abuse/neglect, and oppression/historical trauma. The impact and complexity of these experiences can have lasting effects on individual development, mood, behavior, and functioning. This workshop will provide the context of violence and traumatic loss and explore ways in which helping professionals can be more aware of how trauma presents, ways to address resistant/defiant behaviors, and how to provide trauma informed care in every interaction with the children and families you work with. Information will be presented through lecture, videos, case studies, and group discussion.
