The therapeutic relationship

Description

The therapeutic relationship: skills to maximize your effectiveness with your families without depleting yourself. Often we think of the ability to form and support relationships as a function of our personal capacity - being kind, empathetic and patient. Of course this is true. But there are also skills that we can use, and framing our understanding of the therapeutic relationship as this way can protect us from burn out by giving us an intellectual understanding of the dynamic. There is a twofold benefit to this approach: 1) by using a skill based framework, we can better support our families, and 2) we can more easily transfer these skills to them so that they can support each other better too. We will examine this parallel relationship as well.
