Description |
Many individuals diagnosed with ASD present with skill deficits in the areas of communication, social behavior, and often times display repetitive behaviors. In turn, these deficits may hinder their ability to develop or maintain effective social relationships with others and communicate their needs and wants successfully. Therefore, it is important that individuals who have the opportunity to support someone with an ASD diagnosis develop an understanding of what the core deficits associated with ASD are. This presentation will begin with a discussion on the DSM’s classification of ASD and will continue with explanation on empirically supported strategies that may aid in the development of building trust and rapport with an individual with ASD as well as learn ways to best engage and support an individual with ASD. This workshop will be interactive and include discussions, videos, and activities to better understand how to interact with someone who has a diagnosis with autism.
