Accepting the Diagnosis: Supporting Families of children with health and developmental challenges

Description

Families with children in early intervention are often concerned because of their child has been identified as having a developmental delay. Although most times families are relieved by the support they receive, they can have continuing concerns and worries about the future. These experiences can be more intense if their child has accompanying medical challenges.
This seminar will offer EI providers an opportunity to understand the different ways in which parents cope with these feelings of worry. They are often very unique and individual for each families, however coping styles have been observed by researchers. By understanding these styles, Dr. Nelson will offer ways in which providers can support families and better understand how to meet the emotional needs of parents during the EI years.
