DIR®/Floortime and the Developmental Language Model

Description

The Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based (DIR®/Floortime™) Model is a framework that helps clinicians, parents, and educators conduct a comprehensive assessment and develop an intervention program tailored to the unique challenges and strengths of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other developmental challenges. The objective of the DIR®/Floortime™ Model is to build healthy foundations for social, emotional, and intellectual capacities rather than focusing on skills and isolated behaviors.

The first day of this workshop explores the six stages of functional emotional capacities, the child’s individual differences, and the importance of the relationship. The second day will use video case studies to help participants experience Floortime strategies in action and demonstrate specific skills that will support the clinician and the parent in the development of a robust intervention program. The session will include presentations of case examples, information on coaching parents, and discussion with other professionals. Notions such as engagement, intentionality, shared forms and meanings, comprehension, production, discourse and pragmatic language concepts will be discussed.

Videotaped examples will illustrate how supporting the caregiver’s/clinician's and child’s developmental language profile becomes the pathway for a child to be able to communicate.
