An Overview of DIR (Developmental, Individual-difference, Relationship-based)

Description

This training will give an overview of DIR (Developmental, Individual-difference Relationship-based) Therapy. There will be a discussion on the goals of DIR, and how and why it is used for treatment with children on the autism spectrum (including characteristics of ASD and why DIR is a good match). Next, Emma will discuss the Case Study Research she did for my Master's degree Internship. It will highlight the data collected from in-depth interviews with parents and lead therapists of three boys with ASD diagnoses, and how these perceptions compare and contrast with each other, as well as with the empirical data collected on the children's pragmatic language progress over a period of time. Finally, Emma will use this information to create a dialogue about the importance of parental involvement in our work with children 0-3 years old, and discuss how how parental perceptions and parent-therapist understanding and interactions can impact the development of the children we are working with.
