Pediatric Orthopedic Conditions: A Primer for Physical Therapists

Description

The treatment of children with a primary orthopedic diagnosis is not the most common area of focus for pediatric physical therapists; however, most of these clinicians do address secondary orthopedic problems as part of their interventions. The fact that the musculoskeletal system changes as the child grows makes knowledge of orthopedics a fundamental tool for any pediatric physical therapist, regardless of the primary diagnosis of their pediatric clientele. As the musculoskeletal system grows and develops, new orthopedic issues may arise that need to be recognized and addressed timely. A solid foundation of orthopedics is fundamental in order to address orthopedic problems, optimize patient outcomes, and perhaps refer patients who may require care out of our scope of practice. This course is designed to be an introductory overview of orthopedic conditions in children, including presentation, examination, intervention, and possible causes for referral. The aim is to provide clinicians with a framework for orthopedic evidence-based clinical decision-making in their practice.
