Description:
This presentation is a brief overview of childhood language development from birth to three-years-old. It includes a review of prelinguistic skills to look for prior to expressive and receptive language development, general expressive and receptive language development broken into six-month age brackets, sound development, and general intelligibility expectations up to the age of three. It also describes the difference between speech and language and provides a general idea of which children should be referred for a speech-language evaluation and when. The presentation also provides strategies for other disciplines to use when working with children who have a language delay or to use with young children who are currently acquiring language.
