Home Visiting Safety for Early Interventionists

Description

Early Interventionists in southern Illinois, specifically those from Kaskaskia Workshop in Marion County, follow the principle of working with families in their natural environments. These interventionists collaboratively work with families in their homes and neighborhoods. As Early Interventionists, they need to be informed, aware and prepared when traveling and meeting with families. This one hour training will feature Deputy Ryan Castleman from the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and Delreen Schmidt-Lenz, Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Deputy Castleman has worked with people with developmental disabilities at Kaskaskia Workshop in the past and will review general safety precautions, as well as highlight specific strategies related to safety during home visits and signs of alleged drug use or abuse in a home or neighborhood. He will also discuss car safety and general self-defense techniques. Delreen Schmidt-Lenz will then conduct a reflective discussion of family situations and safety issues that have arisen with the Early Interventionists and how providers work with families in all types of environmental situations.
