Working with Children with Cochlear Implants; Review of Cued Speech, Visual Phonics, and Audiological and Medical Considerations

The first part of the course will be given by Karla Giese and will discuss Cued Speech. This will include an introduction to Cued Speech and how it can be used to support language acquisition. A discussion of the benefits and how best to use Cued Speech will also occur along with offering a direct comparison of Cued Speech and Visual Phonics. Our second presenter, Dr. Trezek, will discuss the use of Cued Speech and Visual Phonics in a framework of literacy development and the research findings which support both Cued Speech and Visual Phonics. The afternoon portion of the workshop will be given by Dr. Matusik and Dr. Redleaf and will cover audiologial and medical topics regarding the issues of cochlear implantation. This will include an introduction and review of audiologic terms and topics, and explanations/demonstrations of common audiometric assessments. In addition, the process of how we consider potential candidates for cochlear implants will be discussed including surgical and other important considerations.
