A visual schedule is an important component in creating a structured environment for children who may have difficulties with everyday routines, and/or transitioning. A visual schedule allows children an additional sensory component to process what activities will occur and in what sequence throughout their day. Visual schedules can be helpful for, but not limited to, addressing difficulty with sequential memory and organization of time, assist with language comprehension problems to understand what is expected, lessen anxiety and reduce the possible occurrence of challenging behaviors by providing the structure for the student to organize and predict daily and weekly events, and assist in transitioning independently between activities and environments. Visual schedules can be used in all environments including, but not limited to, the classroom, gym, Occupational Therapy, Speech/Language Therapy, and home.
