Ready, Set, Go! Developmental Readiness Approach to Toilet Training

Description

Toilet training is a dynamic process between parent and child, representing a major developmental and emotional shift for both. For typical children, as well as children with developmental differences, problems frequently occur and can escalate into serious ongoing medical and emotional problems. This workshop will provide a review of current research regarding toilet training problems. Participants will discuss different methodologies and talk about the pros and cons of various methods. A semi-structured parent interview will be introduced, which is designed to explore the child’s readiness in key developmental domains including: physical, sensory, bowel/bladder, language, cognitive, and social/emotional functioning. Additionally, this interview is designed to help parents explore their own readiness to undertake the process of toilet training with their child. The interview is theoretically based on the DIR model developed by Stanley Greenspan and Serena Wieder, as well as other developmental models. The workshop is designed to help professionals provide anticipatory guidance to parents contemplating toilet training, to problem solve with families’ currently experiencing difficulty with toilet training, and to find appropriate solutions to toilet training challenges. Case based material will be presented to provide attendees the opportunity to plan and discuss potential solutions to commonly experienced problems.

Participants will be able to:
