"T is for Treatment"

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This therapy packed course, will focus on assessment and treatment feeding problems in infants, toddlers and children. Topics covered include: anatomy of feeding aversion, preventing aversion before it starts, baby care basics, successful transition to table foods, toddler’ eating from ages 2 to 6, meeting nutrition needs for infants, toddlers & children, analysis and development of team treatment plans for infants and toddlers, selective versus problem eating, problem-solving, referrals and the team approach to feeding aversion therapy.

Food Chaining therapy is used to diagnose the issues preventing a child from eating with enjoyment and provides a customized diet that matches the child’s oral motor skill level and taste/texture/temperature preferences. The diet is systematically expanded as the child’s skills improve. Food Chaining involves multidisciplinary care and is a family friendly, low-pressure approach designed to nurture both body and spirit. Detailed video case studies will be used to enhance instruction throughout the course.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course, participants will:
1. List anatomical and physiological and aerodigestive factors that create roadblocks to successful eating.
2. Describe the relationship between the health of the aerodigestive tract and development of safe, flexible oral sensory motor feeding skills.
3. Describe the relationship between health, weight and appetite and understand the importance of a feeding schedule to develop internal motivation to eat.
4. Describe picky vs. problem eating.
5. Describe how to set the table for success based on the child's Individualized Eating Profile.
6. Describe key components of Fraker, Walbert and Cox's PreChaining and Food Chaining therapy to treatment for infants, toddlers and children and their families.
