"But aren't you just playing?"...this question is frequently asked of the interventionists working with children and families in early intervention. The answer is "YES"!
In this fun and relaxed session, participants review types of play and stages of play of children in the birth - three years of age range. Humorous lecture and lively discussions focus on the importance of play and how to elicit various skills and maximize a child's potential while following his/her lead. Activities are used to illustrate strategies to incorporate the family into the session, incorporating play and learning into routines, and using materials found in the child's home. Infant play (sensorimotor period of development), constructive play, sensory play, gross motor/outdoor play, social play and dramatic play will be explored. Topics include age appropriate expectations, temperament, sharing, tantrums, how environment and caregiving shape a child's play and how to spot 'red flags' in development through observing children in play. Facilitated small group activities and large group discussion is included in the day's agenda.
