Fostering Whole Communication in the Parent Child Dyad

Description

This workshop will contain discussion relevant to the development of fluid, meaningful communication. This topic is relevant for the understanding of communication within any interaction, but is especially useful in understanding some of the core deficits of autism. We will discuss the differences in concrete communications used to get needs met or make defined statements verses the fluid, rapidly changing and sometimes emotion laden communication which happens between people who are communicating on a dynamic level. This information is relevant to the development of pragmatic communication, which is not uncommonly seen as a deficit area in children evaluated and treated by the early intervention system. The development of pragmatic communication skills will be discussed and examined as it relates to it's role in providing the "meaning behind the words."
