The notion of what makes up a family has recently been expanded with cultural changes in America that have shifted the essence of what was once termed, "the traditional family." With this shift comes a new understanding of how family is defined. This exciting new training will give participants the opportunity to explore the diversity found in the various families served in the Early Intervention program. Participants will discover the dynamics of military families, single parent/ teen parent families, gay/lesbian parent families, adoptive/foster families, nuclear/dual income families, and grandparents raising grandchildren as well as others. Providers will learn the pitfalls of using a “One size fits all” approach to teaming with families.
This interactive, 2 day training includes individual reflection, group work and lively discussion. This will equip providers in recognizing the needs of diverse families, assist them in family competence, help them navigate the complex emotions that can occur and generate a holistic intervention practice for children with disabilities within the modern family.
This training series is presented via two full day trainings, with a “homework” component in between in which participants will view a video and write a response. No partial credit will be awarded for this training. Upon completion of this two-part training series, including the homework assignment, participants will be awarded 12 hours of early intervention credential credit.
PLEASE NOTE: This training series is comprised of 2 face to face sessions and one independent study 'homework' assignment. Participants must participate in all three components to receive early intervention credit. NO Partial Credit Awarded.
