Special Topics in Early Intervention

Description

This full day workshop will explore some of the important considerations facing EI providers when families enter our system. In the morning we will begin with an overview of the Routine-Based Interview, a critical component of the Family Assessment; Ms. Maria Kastanis, Consultant with the EI Training Program, will lead a discussion of the RBI and how this vital information should be incorporated into development of the IFSP goals and strategies. Ms. Tina Copeland, Director of Program Services at the Child & Family Development Center, will provide an introduction to ‘Caregiver Coaching.’ This intervention strategy is widely utilized in other States since it enhances parents’ sense of efficacy and increased functional participation of children in their natural environments (two key goals of early intervention).
Our afternoon sessions will focus on the interface between young children’s health conditions and the need for early intervention services. Dr. Wu and Dr. Pyati will review the medical diagnoses that lead to automatic eligibility for early intervention and the reasons why it is so imperative that services be available if we wish to optimize functional outcomes. Their presentation will utilize case vignettes to illustrate the medical and developmental challenges faced by families and the important role EI providers play through their work in the natural environment.
Our final session in the afternoon will focus on how we intervene with children who have complex medical conditions. The presentation of Dr. Chernoff and Ms. Komie will explore how we may develop service plans that are sensitive to all the issues confronted by caregivers. Working with caregivers EI providers must understand the grief process and the crisis parenting involved with caring for a child with disabilities, particularly when the prognosis is poor.
