SC 231. Self-Stimulation, Stereotypy, and Challenging Behaviors Transformed Into Functional Replacement Behaviors

Description

This session will look at the causes and functions of self-stimulation, stereotypic and challenging behaviors. A team of specialists will identify strategies to assess and meet the underlying need, establish replacement behaviors and improve the client’s ability to function and engage.

Learning Objective One: • Identify; self-stimulation, stereotypic and challenging behaviors seen in autism spectrum disorders (ASD): when an intervention program is necessary: and the 5 different functions that these behaviors can serve.

Learning Objective Two: • Functionally assess the behaviors to identify the underlying cause (s)

Learning Objective Three: • Identify comprehensive intervention strategies that; address the clients underlying needs; utilize sensory, communication, educational and/or behavioral strategies; and develop appropriate replacement behaviors.
