Childhood Apraxia of Speech:Assessment and Treatment

Description

This workshop will focus on both assessment and treatment for individuals with childhood apraxia of
speech (CAS). The components of a thorough motor speech evaluation, as well as how to analyze the
evaluation findings to make an accurate differential diagnosis will be discussed. The majority of the
workshop will focus on the five foundations of the P.R.I.S.M. model for CAS treatment. Specific topics,
including generating use of increasingly complex syllable shapes, establishing a more robust speech
sound repertoire of consonants and vowels, improving prosody, and supporting expressive language
development in the context of speech praxis treatment will be discussed. Video clips, case study
examples, and group practice opportunities will be provided to support understanding of the use of a
wide range of multisensory cueing techniques in treatment, careful selection of the target utterances for
treatment, and development of treatment plans. A portion of the workshop will be devoted to special
considerations for younger and minimally verbal children with suspected CAS.
