This course is designed for occupational therapists, certified
occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapy assistants who are new to pediatrics. This is a
beginner-level course that provides participants with key aspects of evaluation and treatment for the child with hemiplegia.
Intervention strategies will focus exclusively on the trunk and
upper extremities.
An understanding of how the development of children with
hemiplegia impacts symmetrical movement patterns and
bimanual skill will be introduced. An overview of assessments,
common impairments and upper extremity treatment strategies will be provided. Specific treatment activities will be taught using biomechanical, Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) and sensory motor theoretical models. Intervention adjuncts commonly icorporated into therapy will be reviewed. This will provide therapists with an understanding of options they can further explore to effectively treat the child with hemiplegia. Use of constraint-inducted movement therapy will also be discussed.
Lecture, video clips and video case studies will be presented to allow for analysis of impairments and discussion of treatment
options.
