Supporting Families in EI with Internationally Adopted Children

Description

Children who are adopted internationally present with a “Dynamic, tricky mix of development” (Nelson and Arkenberg 2008) because genetic, biological, and environmental factors interact in different ways for each child. The latest trend in adoption research is a focus on recovery processes and mechanisms and an interest in the question of how children may be differently affected by adoption based on their preadoption background experiences or their genetic makeup. Due to limited data available on internationally adopted children, it has been very easy to overrefer or underrefer these children for interventions.
This two hour workshop is designed to address the unique needs of families entering early intervention with children who were adopted internationally. Topics include: overview of international adoption and the agencies in this service area, supporting family concerns regarding social emotional and attachment disorders, unique communication issues -ESL vs. bilingual and a focus on recovery and resilience, national and local level resources, and supporting parent professional decision making within early intervention principles.
