Neonatal Developmental Positioning

Description

This lecture provides an overview of developmental positioning for the neonatal population. Positioning techniques in an isolette are hightlighted with pictures and videos, as well as positioning considerations for the infant in a crib. Also addressed in the lecture is the importance of positioning for head shape, prevention of plagiocephaly and scaphocephaly, prevention of torticollis, and the effect of diaper placement on hip mobility.

This presentation gives a detailed look at the stress on neonatal infants and how developmental positioning can provide soothing, and comfort for restful sleep and promotion of growth. The importance of facilitation of midline with all positioning is essential to the ever-developing premature infant. It is also imperative to pay close attention to positioning and it's effect on the premature infant's head shape. Research has shown, severe plagiocephaly and scaphocephaly can cause developmental delays in infants. This is something that can be prevented with close monitoring of positioning while in the NICU and parent education for continuation of proper and safe positioning for the infant at home.
