A Guide to Goal Selection and Intervention for AAC Users

This presentation discusses
communication ability levels for
individuals who use augmentative and
alternative communication (AAC)
systems. Ability levels are discussed in
terms of device and goal selection.
Descriptions of intervention techniques
for AAC users are also presented.
Specific strategies designed to promote the development of language and social skills are discussed through videos and evidence based treatment strategies.

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify communication ability levels for various AAC users.
2. Choose appropriate communication systems based on an AAC user’s ability level.
3. Select goals in all four areas of communicative competence based on a continuum of intervention for AAC users.
4. Determine appropriate intervention strategies to increase language and social skills.
