Upper Extremity Treatment in Pediatrics

Description

In pediatric practice we often work on achieving improved functional use of the upper extremity for transitions, play, activities of daily living and communication. Functional limitations impeding independence occur due to a variety of impairments that impact the child’s motor control. Inactivity of the postural system musculature effects proximal and distal alignment and thus effects the ability to accurately reach. Weakness, impaired length-tension relationships, atypical synergies of movement, inattention and / or sensory impairments can impact the child’s ability to develop the complex movement and function that our hands are designed to perform.
The intent of this two day course is to explore hands on, task, and environmental strategies to improve the child’s awareness, alignment, activation, coordination, grading and strength of their upper extremities. Didactic material, videos, treatment labs, and problem solving discussions will be used to convey this information. Adjuncts to support treatment results and carry over suggestions will be incorporated each day.
