Description |
When we observe children’s behavior, our minds automatically begin to make assumptions about the reasons and motives of the child. These assumptions are based on our experiences with children and our own histories. Looking at the behavior through an early childhood mental health lens offers an enhanced view. Through this approach, we are able to consider the child’s internal processes in his mind that are based on his experiences and own history. In this workshop, we examine the child’s internal working model of relationships. We explore how this model is formed through his earliest attachments and how that model functions as the template upon which all interactions is based and which guides his behavior. We will also examine our own internal processes based on our experiences and histories which guide our understanding and responses to the child. Through this training, providers will learn a different way of assessing the child’s “behavior” and the potential root causes. Providers will leave with a deeper understanding of children’s behavior, a unique way to assess problematic behaviors, and unique intervention strategies to redirect problematic behaviors into social and emotionally appropriate behaviors.
