Autism: Feeding & Nutrition Challenges

Description

This course will be presented from an interdisciplinary team
approach. It will explore the complex challenges that children
on the autism spectrum face during mealtime, whether it is
at home, school or in a community environment. video case
studies will be reviewed and discussed, considering the
complexities of oral motor and swallowing abilities, sensory
processing, behavior challenges, gastrointestinal symptoms and
nutritional needs. The importance of the parent-child dyad will
be highlighted, addressing how it can best be utilized during
evaluation, planning and intervention. This course will build
upon the clinician’s knowledge of basic feeding and swallowing
mechanics and will be of interest to Occupational Therapists,
Speech and Language Pathologists, Dietitians, Nurses, Early
Interventionists, Educators and any professionals involved in
the care of children with autism.
