The NCIHC is a multidisciplinary organization based in the United States whose mission is to promote culturally competent professional health care interpreting as a means to support equal access to health care for individuals with limited English proficiency.

International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA)

The International Medical Interpreters Association is committed to the advancement of professional medical interpreters as the best practice to equitable language access to health care for linguistically diverse patients. Founded in 1986, with over 1,500 members, most providing interpreting services n over 70 languages, the IMIA is the oldest and largest medical interpreter association in the country. While representing medical interpreters as the experts in medical interpreting, membership to the IMIA is open to those interested in medical interpreting and language access. The IMIA currently has a division of providers, corporate members, and trainers. Policy makers, health care administrators, and others interested in medical interpreting are also welcome to join the IMIA as associate members.

The Chicago Area Translators and Interpreters Association (CHICATA) was established in 1987 as an independent professional association of individual translators and interpreters with the following goals:

  • To promote the recognition of translation and interpretation as professions
  • To protect the rights and interests of professional translators and interpreters
  • To improve the standards and professional ethics, practices, and competence among
  • translators and interpreters
  • To provide an open forum for translators and interpreters for the regular exchange of ideas and experiences
